Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to book a ferry in advance?

Almost always. Ferry operators use demand-based pricing, so the earliest fares are the lowest. On busy routes like Dover to Calais, booking six to eight weeks ahead typically costs far less than booking in the same week, and peak summer sailings can more than double close to departure.

Do ferry prices include my car?

On Ferrymatch, yes. Tick “taking a vehicle” when you search and every price shown includes your car, campervan or motorbike. Some operator sites quote a passenger fare first and add the vehicle later, which is why comparisons can look misleading.

Can I take my dog on a ferry?

Most car ferries carry pets, and many now have pet-friendly cabins or kennels. You will need a valid pet passport or animal health certificate, a microchip and an up-to-date rabies vaccination for international travel. Check the individual operator rules before you book.

How early do I need to arrive at the port?

As a rule, 60 to 90 minutes before departure with a vehicle, and about 45 minutes as a foot passenger. Allow longer at busy international ports in peak season, where biometric border checks can add time to your first crossing.

What happens if my sailing is cancelled?

Operators will normally move you to the next available sailing at no cost. If that does not work for you, you are entitled to a refund. We show which fares are flexible before you book so you can choose the right level of cover.
