Can You Travel on a Ferry Without a Car?

Which routes take walk-on passengers, what it costs, and the connection problem to solve first.

Yes, on most routes. Foot passenger fares are considerably cheaper than taking a vehicle and check-in is shorter at around 45 minutes. The thing to check before booking is how you get from the arrival port to where you are actually going.

How Much Cheaper Is Travelling as a Foot Passenger?

Foot passenger fares are a fraction of vehicle fares, because you are buying a seat rather than deck space. On short crossings the difference is the largest, since the vehicle is most of what you pay for.

You are no longer paying for lane metres, which is the expensive part of a ferry ticket. On a Channel crossing that removes the majority of the fare.

Weigh it against what you spend at the other end. If the trip needs a hire car anyway, taking your own vehicle often wins once hire and its insurance are counted, as set out in the cost of taking a car across.

How Do You Get to the Ferry Terminal on Foot?

Foot passengers use a separate terminal building with its own desk and gate. Some ports have no pedestrian access to the vehicle entrance at all, so check how the terminal is reached before you arrive.

Ferry terminals are built around vehicles. Walking in from the nearest road is sometimes not possible, and a few ports run a shuttle bus from the station that is the only way in.

Every port guide on the site covers terminal access, parking and onward transport. Start from the ferry port guides if the arrival end is the part you are unsure about.

What Is the Onward Connection Like?

Connections vary sharply by port. Some terminals sit beside a railway station, others are several miles from the nearest town with an infrequent bus, so check the far end before booking the crossing.

This is where walk-on trips go wrong. The crossing is the easy part; arriving at 22:30 at a port with no bus until morning is the problem.

Check the last connection of the day against your arrival time, not against the scheduled arrival. A delayed sailing that misses the last train turns a cheap crossing into an expensive taxi.

Can Foot Passengers Take Bikes and Pets?

Bicycles are carried on most routes for a small fee and are often free. Pets are far more restricted without a vehicle, and many short routes will not carry animals on foot at all.

Cycling on is the cheapest way to arrive with transport, and on many operators the bike costs nothing.

Pets are the opposite. Where a car gives your animal somewhere to travel, a walk-on booking often has nowhere to put them, which is covered in the rules for taking a dog on a ferry.

Common questions

Is check-in quicker for foot passengers?

Yes. Allow 45 minutes rather than 90, with check-in normally closing 30 minutes before departure. Border checks still apply on international routes.

Can I take a bike as a foot passenger?

On most routes yes, often free and otherwise for a small fee. Book the bike with your ticket, because space is limited on smaller vessels.

How much luggage can a foot passenger take?

There is no weight allowance in the airline sense, but you carry it yourself and stow it in racks near the passenger decks. There is no baggage handling.

Are all ferry routes open to foot passengers?

No. Some vehicle-only routes, particularly through tunnels and on certain freight-focused services, carry no walk-on passengers at all.
